Founded in 1997 as a non-profit organisation in Boston, the foundation supports low-income farmers in Central America. Sustainable Harvest International was founded on the idea that environmental degradation and rural poverty are interconnected. For this reason, the solution must overcome both conflicts or be linked to a solution. The organisation works long term with farmers. Together with the local farmers, sustainable agriculture and thus environmental protection are practiced.
More than half of the tropical rainforests have already disappeared. The consequences: more than half of the plant and animal species, important CO2 sinks in the form of trees have disappeared forever. An estimated 30-40% of deforestation is accounted for by small farmers. This is because they cannot generate sufficient income for themselves and their families through their work.
Since 1997, Sustainable Harvest International has provided local and long-term assistance to small farmers and their families in Central America. The proven model supports low income rural farmers and provides them with resources to provide an alternative to deforestation and preserve the land for future generations.
In the last 20 years, more than 3,000 families have been trained, over 25,000 hectares of degraded land regenerated and 4 million trees planted.
Sustainable Harvest is active in Belize, Honduras and Panama.
